In 2023, a group of Indigenous and non-Indigenous/settler librarians published a guide to best practices in creating name and subject authority records relating to Indigenous peoples. The document is a set of high-level recommendations specifically written for settlers/non-Indigenous people. Explicitly not a one-size-fits-all solution, the document is limited to the United States and is intended to be used as a starting point for library workers to begin their work of research and reflection on Indigenous issues in their area, past, present, and future. The best practices provide guidance to library staff looking to explore avenues to address inequity in their libraries by thoughtfully building relationships with Indigenous communities and enabling Indigenous self-determination in the words used to describe Indigenous peoples in library catalogs. In this session, participants will learn more about the best practices document and practice applying the guidelines to their own community needs. Audience members will come away with an action plan for future work in ensuring Indigenous naming practices in their institutions are informed by respect and cultural humility.
