Leading the Way, Leaving a Legacy
In this opening plenary, participants are invited to reflect on why we are gathering in this space together and the importance of the international library & archive ecosystem in fostering and sustaining diversity, equity, justice, accessibility & inclusion.
Through an understanding of the policy landscape that deepens oppression and sustains structural inequity, Anne-Marie will share strategies that allies in the library & archive space can consider to build community, to strengthen opportunities, and to ensure that the stories of marginalized communities can be honored, curated, and saved for future generations.
Suspending Disbelief:
A Practice for Collective Change
The library and archive community are at the forefront of social change, and currently positioned to reimagine our collective relationship with our history, our future and our potential. The closing plenary session will reflect on the urgency of this work in the current socio-political climate, the history of Black-led movements to protect access to literacy and archives, the role of remembering to foster a better future, and the discipline of suspending disbelief to foster a more radical and just future.
In this session, Nicole will provide actionable ways not just for participants to resource themselves, but mobilize their communities to collectively face criticism and pushback on their work, and create space to absorb and apply these techniques to what they gleaned from the conference experience.
Nicole invites participants to use this space for inspiration, remembrance, and reflection, and holds it in honor of the voices around the world whose cultural works contributed to social movements but have been lost or destroyed by colonization, censorship destruction, or displacement.

Toronto is the City of Neighborhoods. More than 46 percent of the nearly three million-strong population is foreign-born, and their reception game is so strong that they refer to immigrants as “newcomers”. This bear hug of a welcome is central to what makes this city what it is: a true meeting ground of different cultures, cuisines, and faiths, a pluralist paradise up north. It's a city with a Little India, Chinatown, Greektown, Koreatown, Portugal Village, two Little Italys, and more than 150 spoken languages; a place where the Indigenous population is routinely celebrated, rather than overlooked. —Condé Nast Traveler
