Speaker Bio
Jeff Newman is the College Librarian at New College, at the University of Toronto. In this role he has served as liaison librarian to the Women and Gender Studies, African Studies, Caribbean Studies and Equity studies program. He holds a Masters of Information Studies and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Toronto. Recent initiatives have focused on radical strategies for expanding the presence of Black Canadian authors in online digital collections, and developing strategies for foregrounding and elevating marginalized voices in information literacy practices. These combined experiences have given him an opportunity to explore the ways that privilege, commercial, and institutional power shape how information is discovered and used by students in their writing and research, with a particular insight into the role that online systems and internet culture play in shaping student experiences and scholarly discourse.
