Description

Following the 2020 murder of George Floyd, many library organizations swiftly released statements of solidarity and calls for greater equity for people from minoritized identities. These statements and calls rarely addressed white privilege or culture and their powerful role in our systems and policies. More than three years later, there has been little action, and that social movement's momentum has seemingly fizzled. Efforts to change the narrative about racial equity have been stymied by intense political and social forces who see this work as an existential threat to their livelihood if not existence. In the US, public policies are being put into place to deliberately quash efforts to raise people’s collective consciousness about the inequities built into social systems for centuries. In their article “Paying Attention to White Privilege: A Missing Link to Advancing Racial Equity,” Gulati-Partee and Potapchuk offer a framework for creating an anti-racist organizational culture. Using this framework as a launching point, the presenters will bridge theory to practice and offer practical applications for building a culture of racial equity for libraries. The presentation will discuss common organizational challenges to advancing this work– in often hostile environments–and lay out a deliberate, four-stage strategy for building a strong racial-equity culture. The presentation will provide opportunities for audience engagement and feedback with the presenters and each other.
