Description

The project aims to develop a framework and metrics for a diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) institute. A task force used surveys and focus groups to achieve this goal. An online survey evaluated engagement in libraries and archives with DEI efforts. It targeted GLAM (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums) workers and professionals in spring 2022, yielding more than 300 responses, mostly (92%) from the U.S. These revealed GLAM workers' satisfaction, views, and needs in DEI programs, uncovering links between satisfaction and DEI perceptions. To bridge gaps, further exploration is needed. In pursuit of a more depth of DEI gaps, perceptions, and needs within the GLAM sector, a sequence of focus groups was carried out, expanding upon the findings of a prior survey. In 2022, three groups with 22 participants each delved into these areas. These findings hold the potential to serve as pivotal material for the DEI Institute's curriculum, as they furnish insights to enhance ongoing DEI program strategies and tackle the intricacies of gauging their efficacy. Integrating these recommendations into the curriculum has the capacity to equip GLAM professionals with pragmatic knowledge and competencies to design and execute more potent DEI initiatives within their organizations. The presenters will not only showcase the empirical findings themselves but will also convey the valuable lessons that have been gleaned from the thorough and systematic assessment process.
