Session Type
Pre-Conference: 180 min
Name
York University Libraries and the Jane Finch Community Research Partnership
Description

Since 2013, Jane Finch community members and York University librarians, faculty, and staff members have built the Jane Finch Community Research Partnership as a way to address extractive and problematic research relationships between York University and its neighbouring community in northwest Toronto. This session will discuss the collaborative work by community members and librarians to build an open-access collection of published research about Jane Finch so that despite paywalls, local residents can have convenient access, independent of the university, to information about the community which many of them have contributed to as research participants and interviewees. The session will touch on a range of challenges we’ve faced and how we have tried to address them; funding; publicity; partner organizations; and relationships with other aspects and initiatives of the Jane Finch Community Research Partnership. [The scope of the session, and number of speakers, may broaden once we are able to have further discussions between York U. folks and community members.]
