Description

Purpose & Goals

In 2023, the UNT Libraries Assessment Committee ran a survey to check in on the assessment culture at the library. One of the recurring themes that we found was that people were interested in integrating assessment into their workflows, but they were either unsure if they were doing it properly or felt like they weren’t sure where to start.

Design & Methodology

In order to promote a culture of assessment and to help address anxiety around assessment, we planned two, one and a half hour sessions on back-to-back days. The first day was focused on teaching the assessment cycle and applying it to case studies. With this background, the participants are encouraged to bring their own projects to the second day.

Findings

We plan to discuss the successes and challenges of the seminar and our plans for future assessment trainings.

Action & Impact

We hope that our seminar will positively impact our library’s culture of assessment through creating interpersonal connections with experts, breaking down the process to make it seem less intimidating, and introducing examples of assessment projects already happening around the library.

Practical Implications & Value

We want to present this as an example of an assessment seminar that could be run in any library and could be used to help grow a culture of assessment and to encourage other librarians and staff to incorporate assessment into their own workflows.
