Serving at the 78th President of the Society of American Archivists, Helen Wong Smith has 35 years’ experience in historical repositories in the Pacific. With a B.A. in Hawaiian Studies, 1986, and MLIS, 1991 from the University of Hawai'i at Mānoa, she is currently the Archivist for University Records there and previously served as Historical/Cultural Specialist for the largest private landowner in the state, Hawaiian Collection Librarian at University of Hawaiʻi Hilo, Lead Archivist for the Pacific Island Network of the National Park Service, Executive Director of the Kauaʻi Historical Society, and Librarian/Archivist for the State Historic Preservation Division. Elected President of Hawaiian Library Association, Hawaiian Historical Society and twice of the Association of Hawaiʻi Archivists, she was named a Distinguished Fellow of the Society of American Archivists in 2016. She provides cultural competency training to diverse organizations i.e. Society of American Archivists, Hawaiʻi Museum Association, and the Council of State Archives,and support digitizing archival collections for a number of indigenous collections.
