Archives are often viewed as colonial institutions that have historically been a part of the oppression of marginalized groups. Legacies of racism, erasure, stealing, bullying, are commonly the foundation of relationships between archives and communities. These atrocities tend to be overlooked through the biases of staff and the institutions they work in. This session will be a facilitated discussion on mistrust in archives, with participants working through practical examples on how to rebuild relationships. Based on personal practice, the presenters will facilitate a lecture and discussion, and lead group activities that will provide participants with the tools to engage in conversations of mistrust with their user communities. Starting from a place of owning archival and institutional colonial violence, the facilitators will guide participants through strategies to build trust with their communities.
