Name
Weaving “gentle” textile craft with “hard” data: Introducing data fundamentals through creative workshops
Description

Introducing data skills to diverse groups and disciplines of study can be challenging. The fields of science and technology have historically excluded marginalized groups like women and people of colour and its repercussions carry into the present. To diversify who we reach in our digital scholarship and data culture endeavors, it is paramount to build a culture of inclusivity and acknowledge the illusion of “hard” data, by “softening” it with a humanist lens. In this session, we propose a melding of physical data visualization (“data physicalization”) and critical making with traditional crafts like crochet and collage, to engage students and communities in creative experiential learning. By offering “feminized” crafts as a medium to convey data, the standard image of data as spreadsheets and numbers is circumvented and co-curricular workshop participants are welcomed to engage with datasets through approachable methods. During our facilitated lectures, we will share our experiences developing a series of workshops with this ethos. We will discuss the planning process, with particular attention to the learning outcomes and pedagogy. We will further discuss the logistics of implementing a new type of workshop, the budget and materials required, its relation to the emergence of creative spaces within our library, and how our workshops were received by participants.
