As issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion are now major considerations for learning and research in academic libraries, less attention has been paid to the difficulty of understanding and conducting research related to these concerns. This challenge is amplified due to the complexity of interdisciplinary research, where interests, methods, and ontological beliefs collide. The area of women and gender studies (WGS) has long grappled with the concerns of interdisciplinary study in equity, diversity, and inclusion. WGS professional organizations have continually addressed these difficulties in long-term efforts to develop, maintain, and disseminate research frameworks and collections recommendations for librarians. This poster will present past and current work from members of a women and gender studies-focused professional organization to map and categorize existing research, establish and maintain core collections, and effectively situate existing interdisciplinary knowledge in gender research. From this poster, attendees will gain a greater understanding of the current state of women and gender studies research and collections, and of the identified gaps in the scholarly literature and library collections that persist. The presenters will also address considerations of how this work has been sustained over time, and future directions.
