Description

This poster summarizes library program design and delivery at the Jim Peebles Science & Technology Library for Indigenous students and faculty; these programs support Indigenous library services and showcase Indigenous resources to Indigenize and diversify library services and increase cultural awareness campus-wide. Relationship-building is a cornerstone of liaison librarianship and especially important for historically marginalized students. The Wawatay program supports and empowers Indigenous science students throughout their degrees through various efforts, one of which is a connection to an embedded Science Librarian. The Science Librarian provides a library orientation session for Indigenous students, teaches three classes in the program’s “Scientific Method and Beyond” course, and is readily available to Wawatay students for reference support. Working alongside the Indigenous Library Intern, the librarian also created a book display and Indigenous Science LibGuide in Spring 2023. The guide provides support for searching for Indigenous science-related resources, and information on offensive language in the catalogue, including example keywords and subject headings. Librarianship, like all fields and careers, is always improved by having supportive and valuable services that are representative of the community we serve. In speaking with Science faculty, students, and library staff, library programming for Indigenous communities and increasing cultural awareness has been successful
