Description

When community and institutional partners come together to develop community-driven archive projects they approach their collaborations from distinct frameworks and with unique ideas for potential project outcomes. For many communities, especially those that have been subject to historical erasure or trivialization, the stakes can be high – even existential. While the stakes for institutional partners are perhaps more aspirational. In this session, panelists will discuss how community and institutional partners can find common ground by framing their collaborations around the concept of justice, focusing especially on the shared language that partners use in communicating about their justice-seeking work. Presenters will share experiences from several recent community-driven archives projects and lead a discussion with the audience on how cultural-historical workers can strive to develop liberatory and reparative projects. This interactive session will unpack questions and topics such as: • “Don’t just talk about it, be about it.” • What is active solidarity? • How to develop guiding principles that will define shared goals. • How can individual archivists take agency and work towards justice even when they represent institutions that may not share these same values? • What are some ways to address and mitigate harm?
